Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which has been a victim of unrest and “anti-national activities” for over a year now, witnessed yet another disturbing incident on Thursday.

Amid the ongoing tension between the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed student unions, a poster demanding “freedom for Kashmir and Palestine” appeared on the JNU campus yesterday.

The poster was noticed by some students on the wall of the School of Social Sciences’ new block, after which they alerted the university administration.

“Freedom for Kashmir! Free Palestine! Right to Self Determination Long Live! DSU,” reads the poster, which appeared in the name of ultra-Left group Democratic Students Union (DSU). The JNU administration ordered the removal of the poster soon after the matter was brought into its notice.

The DSU is the same group whose former members Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and others organised a protest rally on February 9, 2016, against the hanging of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru and Kashmiri separatist Maqbool Bhat.

These students were booked under sedition charges for allegedly raising anti-national slogans during the rally.

“The poster has been there for three-four days. But this is nothing new as such posters from DSU keep emerging at the start of sessions,” a student from another Left group was quoted by Times of India, in its report, as saying.

“On February 9 this year they failed to create any disturbance in JNU and so they targeted Delhi University. This poster is another attempt to destabilise JNU’s academic environment,” said Hariram Mishra, professor of Sanskrit.
