Ceasefire Now: Unmute Gaza Project Installed Around Philly

JANUARY 18, 2024

Over the last week a number of bus shelter ads around Center City, Philadelphia have been removed and replaced with images to remind people of the current crisis in Gaza and call for a ceasefire. This Philly initiative has been organized by Art in Ad Places, their first to-date in Philadelphia, using the artworks made available to the public by the Unmute Gaza project.

“Unmute Gaza is a campaign that brings photographers in Gaza together with artists and activists to humanize the people of Gaza, share the crisis unfolding there, and declare a refusal to remain silent on this issue,” Art in Ad Places wrote on Instagram. “Dozens of artists and photographers have collaborated on posters. Unmute Gaza makes the posters available for free download on their website, and the images have been appearing on streets worldwide.”

Art in Ad Places was a New York City-based campaign that replaced outdoor advertising with artwork from 2017 to 2021. Not only is this their first time in Philly, it’s their first installation since 2021.

“Unmute Gaza has inspired us to pull out our high-vis vests for the first time in nearly three years,” Art in Ad Places explained. “With no payphones left in New York City, we headed to Philadelphia, which still has plenty of analog advertising infrastructure. Let’s not say that Art in Ad Places is back, but we are honored to be installing a selection of Unmute Gaza’s posters.”

“As many people all around the world, we are shocked by the situation in Palestine, and have been for many years,” Unmute Gaza writes on their website. “Palestine is under fire. Thousands of civilians are dying in Gaza. Our governments in Europe [and the U.S.] are complicit of this Genocide. Their silence hurts.”

You can download and print any of the artworks here, put them up in your windows or share them online, and join the chorus calling for a ceasefire.
